CHAPTER 5; ( MEMORY, IMPROVING CONCENTRATION & READING SYSTEM )
The term "learning pyramid" refers to a
collection of well-known learning models and representations that relate
varying levels of retention brought on by distinct types of learning. This
could mean that learning has some stages that explains from the moment that we
receive the information and how to process it to our brain until the stage
where it fully uploaded and downloaded clearly. This is needed for us, humans
as we are a creature and not a mechanical device or some things so that it will
remain in our brain clearly and understandable.
Students need to understand how information is learned and
to understand the needs of using various kinds of active learning strategies in
learning, retaining, and using the information. Such as we as students need to train
our brain to UPLOAD and DOWLOAD the data or information received. For
example, when we read the text from the books, set of data, variety of
information, do some research is the moment that we UPLOAD the information in
our brain. Then, we need to secure the information by DOWNLOADING it by
answering questions, doing quizzes, rewrite notes, do revisions, teach others,
or even question yourself about the certain topics from the information that
you have read which you have uploaded before.
We, as humans have brain which function using three main sensors such as ears, mouth, nose, skin, and eyes. This leads us to do some system while getting input using the sensors and process to three types of memory which is: -
- Sensory Memory (SM) → information coming from one of 5 senses
(ex; hear the explanation and focus)
- Short-Term Memory (STM) → rehearse or repeat and use some active learning
(ex; hear, see, and write or solve question)
- Long-Term Memory (LTM) → revision after class
(ex; reread, repeat, exercises, and revisions)
HOW FORGETTING MAY OCCUR ?
- Not pay attention in class / lecture (not focus / distracted)
- Not understand
- Cramming (last minute study)
- Do not have strategies (unclear)
- Anxiety (assignments & test piling up / stress / negative thought / unprepared)
- Massed practices (revision / quizzes)
- Break reading material (2 chapter a day, not all a day)
- Rehearsal (repeat – reread – reteach)
- Elaborate strategies (acronym / image / acrostics)
- Lack of attention
- Lack of interest
- Lack of motivation
- Distractions from others
- Uncomfortable environment
- Physiological matter (illness / tired)
- Psychological matter (anxiety / worries / problems)
- USE : use goal settings and time-management settings
- CREATE : create positive environment – find better location, minimize distractions
- DEAL : deal with personal problems / competing activities
- USE : use active learning activities (discussed above)
- MATCH : match your learning style to the task
- MONITOR : monitor your concentration
